Bjelin
Bjelin Flooring — Swedish Woodura Engineered Hardwood
Bjelin is the Swedish flooring manufacturer behind Woodura, a wood-fibre surface technology that replaces the thin sawn veneer used on conventional engineered hardwood. Bjelin is co-owned by Välinge Innovation, the company that invented the modern click-lock joint in 1994 and developed the 5G locking system now licensed across the industry. Every Bjelin floor stocked at Yaletown Floor uses both technologies. Bjelin flooring ships across Canada with free samples on every SKU.
Why Bjelin flooring
- Woodura surface technology — a compressed wood-fibre wear layer that is roughly three times more scratch-resistant than the 2–6 mm veneer used on standard engineered hardwood, while keeping a real wood surface underfoot.
- Waterproof construction — Woodura planks are waterproof at the plank level, which makes them suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements where traditional hardwood is not recommended.
- 5G click-lock installation — the angle-and-drop joint installs as a floating floor without glue or nails, so most rooms are DIY-friendly. Several ranges are also approved for glue-down.
- Extra-long, extra-wide planks — the XL and XXL ranges use long-plank formats that reduce visual seams in open-plan rooms.
- Commercial-rated options — the Contrast, Ash, Walnut and Herringbone ranges carry commercial-use ratings for offices, showrooms and light retail.
- Radiant heat compatible — the Herringbone range is approved for installation over in-floor radiant heating.

Nature grade or Select grade?
Most Bjelin colours are offered in two grades, and the difference is appearance rather than durability. Nature grade keeps more knots, mineral streaking and colour movement for a relaxed, rustic look. Select grade is sorted for a cleaner, more uniform board with fewer knots and tighter colour consistency, and carries a small price premium. Both use the identical Woodura surface and 5G locking system, so wear performance is the same. If you are matching an existing floor or want a calm, contemporary room, choose Select; if you want visible character, choose Nature.
Where you can install Bjelin
Because the Woodura surface is waterproof at the plank level, Bjelin can go in rooms that rule out ordinary engineered hardwood — kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, entryways and below-grade basements — as well as every standard living space. The floating 5G installation tolerates normal seasonal movement, and the Herringbone range is rated for radiant in-floor heat. For commercial projects, look for the ranges carrying a commercial-use rating.
Common questions about Bjelin
Is Bjelin the same as Välinge?
They are closely related. Välinge Innovation co-owns Bjelin and developed both the 5G click-lock joint and Woodura surface technology. Välinge is the technology company; Bjelin is the consumer flooring brand that builds on it. Floors previously sold here under the Välinge name are now stocked as Bjelin.
How is Woodura different from normal engineered hardwood?
Conventional engineered hardwood glues a thin sawn veneer of real wood over a plywood or HDF core. Woodura compresses wood fibre onto the core under high pressure, producing a denser, harder surface that resists dents and scratches far better while still being real wood.
Can Bjelin floors be sanded and refinished?
No. Woodura surfaces are not built to be sanded back like a thick-veneer floor. They are designed to last decades without refinishing, which is what the added scratch resistance buys you.
What does Bjelin cost in Canada?
Between $11.99 and $13.99 CAD per square foot at Yaletown Floor, depending on range, plank size and grade.
How long does a Bjelin floor last?
Thirty to fifty years or more in a residential setting with normal care and correct installation.
Can I get a sample first?
Yes. Every Bjelin SKU has a free sample. Order one from any product page and it ships anywhere in Canada, so you can see the colour in your own light before committing.
Ordering and delivery
Free samples ship Canada-wide on every Bjelin floor, and orders over 1,000 square feet ship free. If you are deciding between grades, colours or plank sizes, order two or three samples together and compare them in the room they are destined for — daylight and artificial lighting change how oak, ash and walnut read considerably.
