Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
Luxury vinyl plank is a wood-look floor built from layers: a printed design film under a clear wear layer, bonded to a rigid or flexible core. It is waterproof, it takes scratches better than most laminate, and it is the most common choice in Canada for kitchens, basements, rentals and whole-home renovations. This page holds our full plank range across all cores and install types.
Start with the core
- SPC (stone-plastic): the most rigid and dimensionally stable. Best over uneven subfloors and in rooms with big temperature swings. See SPC vinyl.
- WPC (wood-plastic): softer and warmer underfoot, slightly thicker, a little more prone to denting.
- Flexible LVP: thin planks that glue to the subfloor, common in commercial jobs where a very flat subfloor already exists.
Then the wear layer
The wear layer is the single most important durability number. 12 mil is fine for bedrooms and guest rooms; 20 mil is the safe choice for a family home with pets; 28 mil and above is built for shops and offices. Total plank thickness affects feel and how well the floor bridges subfloor dips, not how well it resists scratches.
Install type
Click-lock planks float over the subfloor and are the DIY favourite. Glue-down planks sit lower, handle rolling loads and are standard in commercial rooms. Both are waterproof; the difference is how they are fixed and how they feel underfoot.
Condos and sound
Most buildings require an IIC rating for floating floors. Many LVP planks include an attached IXPE pad that meets a typical bylaw. If your board asks for a higher number, add acoustic underlayment only when the manufacturer allows it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between LVP and laminate?
LVP has a waterproof vinyl core; laminate has a wood-fibre core that is water-resistant at best. Laminate is often harder underfoot; LVP handles wet rooms.
How thick should luxury vinyl plank be?
Thickness affects comfort and how well the floor bridges subfloor dips. For durability, look at the wear layer instead: 20 mil for a busy home.
Is luxury vinyl plank good with dogs?
Yes. Choose a 20 mil or thicker wear layer and a textured matte finish, which hides claw marks better than gloss.
Can LVP be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, it is waterproof. Seal the perimeter with silicone in full bathrooms so water cannot get under the floor.
