Maple Hardwood Flooring — Installation Guide and 255 SKUs Across Canada

Maple hardwood flooring is the harder, brighter, more uniform alternative to oak. With a Janka hardness of 1450 (vs oak's 1290), maple resists dents from dropped utensils, chair legs, and pet claws better than oak. The tight grain reads clean and contemporary — maple is the floor choice for shoppers who find oak too "busy" visually. Yaletown Floor stocks 255 maple hardwood SKUs including solid and engineered formats with full installation guidance — shipped Canada-wide.

Why maple hardwood flooring

  • Harder than oak (Janka 1450 vs 1290) — Better dent resistance against dropped objects and high-heel shoe traffic.
  • Cleaner grain pattern — Tighter, more uniform grain reads contemporary and minimalist. Pairs with modern and Scandi interiors.
  • Naturally pale tone — Cream-to-honey colored maple brightens spaces. Stains beautifully to any color from light Scandi to dark walnut tones.
  • Available solid and engineered — Solid maple for traditional above-grade installs with multi-refinish potential. Engineered maple for concrete subfloors, basements, condos, and radiant heat.
  • Premium brand availability — Mannington, Biyork, Vidar, Mirage and 25+ other brands ship maple SKUs to our Canadian distribution.

Maple hardwood installation — step by step

  • Step 1: Acclimate — 48–72 hours in install space at 35–55% indoor RH before installing. Solid maple is particularly sensitive to humidity swings.
  • Step 2: Inspect subfloor — Check flatness (3mm tolerance over 3 meters). Self-level any low spots. Check moisture (sub 14% in plywood, sub 4 lb in concrete).
  • Step 3: Choose install method — Solid maple: nail-down over plywood subfloor (3/4" minimum). Engineered maple: glue-down, nail-down, or click-lock floating install depending on product.
  • Step 4: Expansion gap — Leave 3/8" perimeter gap around all walls, columns, and pipes. Cover with quarter-round or baseboard.
  • Step 5: Finish — Most maple is factory-pre-finished. Site-finished maple requires polyurethane application after install — plan 5–7 days cure before furniture.

Maple hardwood purchasing concerns — solved

  • "Solid vs engineered maple?" Solid for traditional above-grade with multi-refinish potential. Engineered for concrete subfloors, basements, radiant heat.
  • "Will maple yellow over time?" Natural maple lightens slightly with UV. Stained maple stays color-stable longer.
  • "Best maple for pets?" Engineered maple with aluminum-oxide UV-cured finish. Janka 1450 plus hard wear layer resists claw scratches.
  • "Plank width?" 3–4" reads traditional. 5–7" reads modern. Wider planks require flatter subfloors.
  • "Delivery and samples?" Free samples Canada-wide in 2–3 business days. Free shipping on orders 1,000+ sq ft.
