This is the question we are asked more than any other, and the marketing on both sides makes it harder to answer than it should be. The short version: laminate has the harder wear surface, vinyl has the core that survives water, and almost every other difference follows from those two facts. This guide uses real specifications from the laminate and vinyl ranges we actually stock, and it corrects a few claims — including some printed on products we sell.

What Laminate and Vinyl Actually Are
Laminate is a wood product. A printed decor paper is impregnated with melamine resin, pressed onto a high-density fibreboard core, and topped with a melamine overlay that usually contains aluminium oxide particles. The European industry body EPLF puts laminate at 65% or more wood by content. The core is HDF — wood fibre compressed above 800 kg/m³, denser than the MDF used in furniture.
Vinyl contains no wood at all. A rigid-core vinyl plank is a printed vinyl film under a PVC wear layer and a thin urethane factory finish, bonded to a core of limestone powder and PVC (SPC) or a foamed wood-polymer blend (WPC). Most ranges carry an attached IXPE or cork pad. Sheet vinyl and glue-down LVT use the same chemistry in a different format.
Both are photographs of wood pressed under a wear surface. Neither is wood in the sense that a hardwood floor is wood — you cannot sand and refinish either one. That is not a criticism; it is why they cost a fraction of what hardwood costs.
The Core Is the Whole Story
- Laminate's core swells when wet, and it does not fully recover. Wood fibre held under compression since the factory press releases that compression when it absorbs water. Research from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory on wood-fibre panels shows this springback is partly irreversible, concentrates at the edges, and that swollen edges then wick liquid faster — a feedback loop.
- Vinyl's core cannot swell, because there is nothing in it to absorb water. PVC is a non-hygroscopic thermoplastic. This is the single genuine advantage vinyl has, and it is a big one.
- Laminate's wear surface is harder. Aluminium oxide sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, suspended in a thermosetting resin. Vinyl's scratch protection is a urethane coat that ISO 10582 notes is usually under 0.03 mm thick. If your main enemy is dog claws and dragged furniture in a dry room, laminate has the mechanical advantage.
- Build height differs more than people expect. Our laminate runs 7–12 mm on the board, up to 14 mm total with an attached pad. Our SPC runs 4–6.5 mm. That difference decides whether your interior doors still clear the floor.

The Waterproof Claim, Honestly
This is the section that matters most, and it is the one where the industry is least straight with people. Laminate is water resistant. It is not waterproof. We stock ranges that print "100% Waterproof" on the box, and we are telling you plainly that the claim overstates what the product does.

Neither floor is immune to water. With laminate the board is destroyed; with vinyl the board survives and the problem moves underneath it.
Here is what we verified before writing this:
- There is no standardised definition of "waterproof" for laminate in North America. ANSI/NALFA LF-01, the North American laminate standard, contains no waterproof definition, requirement or test. Its 14 tests include exactly one water-related test — Thickness Swell, a 24-hour immersion of an unassembled coupon with a residential limit of under 18% swell. That is a dimensional-stability check, not a waterproofing claim.
- NALFA itself does not use the word. Its published position uses "Topical Moisture Protection" and describes the surface as built to resist everyday spills and moisture.
- "72 hours" is not a test standard. The actual surface test — NALFA's assembled joint swell test, equivalent to ISO 4760:2022 — runs for 24 hours. ISO describes its own purpose as evaluating "small occasional topical moisture spill resistance… such as e.g. a glass of water falling and spilling then cleaned immediately after." The 72-hour figure you see on boxes is a warranty term: wipe it up within 72 hours and you are covered.
- Even where waterproof warranties exist, they usually cover the surface, not the subfloor. Standard waterproof laminate warranties cover topical spills and wet mopping, require a perimeter seal to be valid, and exclude flooding, plumbing failures, subfloor moisture and hydrostatic pressure.
Now the honest part about vinyl. A waterproof floor is not a waterproof installation. Vinyl's core will not swell — that is real — but a floating vinyl floor is not sealed. Water reaches the subfloor through the seams, and once it is under a non-permeable floor it has nowhere to evaporate. Restoration guidance under ANSI/IICRC S220 notes that seams and joints let water beneath the surface, particularly on floating installations, and that waterproof floors can trap exactly the conditions mould needs. Vinyl warranties cover the plank, not the subfloor, the adhesive, or mould growth underneath.
The practical rule: vinyl survives the spill you did not notice for a day; neither product survives the dishwasher line that ran overnight. If a room has a genuine flood risk, the answer is a glue-down installation with sealed seams, not a click floor with a waterproof sticker.
Scratch vs. Dent — The Real Trade-Off
These are two different failure modes and each product wins one.
Scratching. Laminate's surface is a thermosetting melamine resin, usually loaded with aluminium oxide. Vinyl's is a PVC wear layer under a urethane finish that ISO 10582 puts at usually under 0.03 mm. Mechanically, laminate should and does resist surface scratching better. We are not going to publish a head-to-head number, because none exists — laminate is measured in Taber revolutions to initial wear point and vinyl is not on that scale at all. But the mechanism is not controversial.
Denting. Here the published specifications favour laminate too, which surprises people. Major laminate makers publish residual indentation of ≤0.05 mm to EN ISO 24343-1, while ISO 10582 permits up to ≤0.1 mm for heterogeneous PVC — twice as permissive. That said, good LVT routinely achieves laminate-level results in production. The honest claim is that the specification limits are looser for vinyl, not that every vinyl floor dents more than every laminate.
One myth worth killing: the claim that laminate has no indentation standard. EN ISO 24343-1 is literally titled "Resilient and laminate floor coverings — Determination of indentation and residual indentation," and ANSI/NALFA LF-01 §3.1 is itself a 24-hour static load test.
AC Ratings — What They Do and Do Not Tell You
AC stands for Abrasion Class, defined in the European standard EN 13329. Two things about it are widely misunderstood.
First, it measures surface abrasion and nothing else. NALFA states this in print: "An AC rating characterizes only the wear resistance of a laminate flooring product," and warns that "a high AC class only refers to the wear resistance level, it does not imply better scratch and/color fading resistance." Impact resistance (IC1–IC3), staining and swelling are separate, independent ratings under the same standard.
Second, it is a laminate scale. If you see an AC rating on a vinyl or SPC product, that brand is borrowing a laminate measure that does not apply. North America's own laminate standard, NALFA LF-01, does not use AC ratings at all — they are European, used here as marketing shorthand.

One more note that should influence where you put laminate at all: EN 13329 explicitly excludes areas subjected to frequent wetting, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and saunas. No AC rating changes that.
Vinyl Wear Layer — The Number That Matters
Vinyl has no AC rating. Its durability spec is the wear layer, measured in mils. One mil is 0.001 inch, or 0.0254 mm exactly.

We are citing ISO 10582 here rather than the familiar "6 mil residential, 12 mil light commercial, 20 mil heavy commercial" chart, because that chart is retailer convention — no trade association actually publishes it. The ISO minimums above are a real standard you can hold a supplier to.
One caveat worth knowing: under ISO 10582 the wear layer by definition excludes the factory finish. So the mil number does not describe the urethane coating that actually takes your first scratches. Thicker is genuinely better for long-term wear-through, but it is not a scratch rating.
When Laminate Is the Right Call
Choose laminate when
- The room is dry and stays dry. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, upstairs hallways, home offices.
- Scratching is your main concern. Large dogs, kids dragging furniture, a busy entry hall in a dry climate — the melamine wear surface genuinely outperforms vinyl here.
- You want the lowest material cost. Laminate reaches down to $1 per sq ft, below anything in our vinyl range.
- You want a harder, more solid feel. A 12 mm laminate on a good underlay feels more like a hardwood floor underfoot than a 5 mm SPC does.
- You want texture that matches the grain. Embossed-in-register laminate at 12 mm still holds an edge on realism against most mid-priced vinyl.

When Vinyl Is the Right Call
Choose vinyl when
- Water is a realistic risk. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, entryways, anywhere a pet bowl lives.
- The floor is below grade. Basements have slab moisture moving upward, which no laminate water-resistance rating addresses.
- Door clearance is tight. A 4–6.5 mm SPC build often avoids cutting doors that a 12 mm laminate plus underlay would not.
- The subfloor is imperfect. Rigid cores bridge minor undulation that would telegraph through and stress a laminate click joint.
- You want it warmer and quieter underfoot. The attached IXPE or cork pad on most of our vinyl ranges does real work here.

Sound, Underfoot Feel and Strata Rules
Vinyl is usually quieter than laminate in practice, but not for the reason people assume — and the specification numbers do not say what most listings imply.
- IIC and STC rate the assembly, not the plank. They measure the whole floor-ceiling system: subfloor, joists, insulation, air space and ceiling. A number quoted for a product alone is meaningless without the tested assembly description.
- The pad governs the result, not the surface material. In published lab work, the same vinyl tile moved 18 IIC points — from 41 to 59 — purely by changing the resilient layer beneath it. Different hard finishes over the same sound mat landed within a few points of each other.
- The right spec to ask for is ΔIIC per ASTM E2179, plus the full assembly it was tested in. And note that a ΔIIC measured over a concrete slab does not carry over to a wood-joist floor.
- Canada's National Building Code requires STC 50 for airborne sound and sets no impact requirement at all. Strata bylaws vary building to building — check yours before you buy, because some are stricter than code.
- The "hollow" or "clicky" complaint about laminate is real but unmeasured. It is in-room walking noise, which IIC does not measure at all. A 12 mm board over a quality underlay reduces it considerably; a thin board over a bare slab is where the complaint comes from.
Radiant Heat and Cold Slabs
- Both work over radiant heat, with essentially the same temperature limit. Manufacturers cluster around 27 °C / 80 °F, and several apply an identical rule to their laminate and their vinyl. Confirm the number on your specific product — printed conversions are frequently wrong, and 85 °F appears on some North American sheets where European sheets say 27 °C.
- Vinyl transmits heat better. At an identical thermostat setting, measured surface temperatures put SPC and LVT above laminate, because laminate's thicker build plus its required underlayment insulates more. Both laminate and vinyl bodies cap total floor-covering R-value at 0.15 m²K/W.
- The real dividing line is electric versus hydronic, not laminate versus vinyl. Several manufacturers disallow electric mats laid directly on the subfloor. Check that before you specify anything.
- On a cold Vancouver slab, vinyl with an attached pad feels warmer — but that is the pad and the thermal conductivity, not a rating either product publishes.
Formaldehyde, VOCs and Indoor Air
Both products are regulated in Canada, and the honest position is that neither is a problem when you buy compliant goods.
Laminate. The HDF core is a composite wood product, so it falls under Canada's Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products Regulations (SOR/2021-148), in force since January 2023. The limits match the US CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI numbers — MDF at 0.11 ppm, thin MDF at 0.13 ppm — and the regulation prohibits importing or selling non-compliant finished goods. A CARB2-compliant product meets the Canadian numbers, but in Canada the legal obligation is SOR/2021-148.
Vinyl. Ortho-phthalates were a legitimate concern a decade ago and have largely been designed out of North American retail vinyl in favour of DOTP and DEHT. Note the regulatory reality: Canada's Phthalates Regulations cover toys and childcare articles, not flooring, so this shift came from retailer commitments rather than law. We would not claim all vinyl sold today is phthalate-free — but independent retesting found no detectable phthalates in newer samples.
FloorScore, which many of our ranges carry, is worth understanding precisely: it certifies VOC emissions against CDPH Standard Method v1.2 over a 14-day chamber test. It is not a formaldehyde-compliance mark and it does not cover phthalates — SCS states that explicitly.

Two pricing myths worth clearing up. There is no Canadian tariff on flooring. We checked the CBSA measures-in-force list: no flooring product of any type is subject to a Canadian anti-dumping or countervailing measure. The US Section 301 duties on vinyl flooring apply to goods entering the United States, not Canada. And warranty length is not lifespan — "limited lifetime residential" warranties are typically prorated, and they exclude the things that actually end a floor's life: scratches from dragged furniture, gouges, impact damage, and in some cases pets.

Laminate — pros
- The hardest wear surface in the category. Melamine with aluminium oxide beats any vinyl finish on scratch resistance.
- Lowest entry price. Reaches $1 per sq ft, below anything in our vinyl range.
- Tighter published indentation limits than ISO 10582 requires of PVC.
- Feels solid underfoot at 12 mm, closer to hardwood than a thin rigid core.
Laminate — cons
- The core is wood fibre and swells irreversibly once wet. Damaged boards get replaced, not dried out.
- "Waterproof laminate" is an unregulated marketing term with no standardised test behind it.
- Not suitable for bathrooms, laundry rooms or below grade — the governing standard says so.
- Taller build can mean cutting doors and more awkward transitions.
Vinyl — pros
- The core genuinely cannot absorb water. This is the one uncontested advantage in the whole comparison.
- Works everywhere in the house, including bathrooms, laundry and basements.
- Low build height — 4–6.5 mm SPC often avoids door cutting entirely.
- Warmer and quieter underfoot, thanks to the attached IXPE or cork pad on most ranges.
Vinyl — cons
- Softer wear surface. A urethane finish under 0.03 mm scratches more readily than melamine.
- More permissive indentation limits in the governing standard, so check the specific product if you have heavy point loads.
- A waterproof floor is not a waterproof installation. Water still reaches the subfloor through seams, and warranties do not cover what happens down there.
- Costs more at the entry level than the cheapest laminate.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?
No — it is water resistant. There is no standardised definition of "waterproof" for laminate in North America, and ANSI/NALFA LF-01 contains no waterproof test. Laminate cores are compressed wood fibre, and wood fibre swells when wet. If you need a floor that survives standing water, choose vinyl.
What does "72-hour water resistance" actually mean?
It is a warranty term, not a test result — spills wiped up within 72 hours are covered. The actual industry surface test runs for 24 hours and, in ISO's own words, simulates a spilled glass of water cleaned up immediately after.
Which is more durable?
Neither, universally. Laminate resists scratching better because of its melamine and aluminium-oxide surface. Vinyl resists water and moisture better because its core has nothing to absorb. Pick based on which threat your room actually faces.
Does an AC rating apply to vinyl?
No. AC is from EN 13329, a laminate standard. If a vinyl product shows an AC rating, it is borrowing a scale that does not apply to it. For vinyl, look at the wear layer in mils instead.
Can I put laminate in a bathroom or basement?
We do not recommend it. EN 13329 explicitly excludes frequent-wetting areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms, and basements add slab moisture from below that no topical rating addresses.
What does each cost?
Laminate is $1–$5 per sq ft material, SPC vinyl $2–$5, WPC vinyl $4–$8. Click-lock installation is $2.50 per sq ft for either, so laminate installed runs roughly $3.50–$7.50 and SPC $4.50–$7.50.
Is vinyl quieter?
Usually in practice, but because of the attached pad, not the material. IIC and STC rate the whole floor-ceiling assembly. Check your strata bylaw and specify to a tested assembly, not a product name.
Which is better for dogs?
Laminate for claw scratches, vinyl for accidents and water bowls. If your dog is large and your home is dry, laminate at AC5. If there is any moisture risk, vinyl with a 20 mil or thicker wear layer.
How long will each last?
Laminate is generally put at 15–25 years residential. For modern rigid-core vinyl there is no authoritative published figure yet — the category is younger than the service-life charts people cite. Both usually get replaced for appearance rather than wear.

There is no credible Canadian evidence that either lowers appraised value, and none quantifying a premium for any material. Choose for how you will live on the floor.
