Click-lock vinyl flooring

Click-lock vinyl planks lock together edge to edge and float over the subfloor, with no glue and no nails. It is the most DIY-friendly floor we sell: a single room is a weekend job with a utility knife, spacers and a tapping block. This page holds more than 900 click planks and tiles from 27 brands, including Parador, Triforest, MSI, Unifloor, Twelve Oaks, Grandeur and Shnier, from $2.19 per sq ft. You'll also see it sold as floating vinyl plank flooring: it's the same floor.

Click or glue-down?

  • Click (floating): fastest to install, can be lifted and replaced, and hides minor subfloor unevenness. Best for homes, condos and rentals.
  • Glue-down: sits lower and takes rolling loads better, so it is the standard for shops, offices and heavy commercial rooms. See glue-down vinyl.

Installing a click floor

  • Acclimatise the boxes in the room for 48 hours.
  • Check flatness: most brands allow about 3 mm over 2 m. Fill dips and grind high spots before you start.
  • Leave an expansion gap of roughly 6–10 mm at every wall and fixed object, and cover it with baseboard or quarter round.
  • Stagger end joints by at least 6–8 inches so the floor looks natural and locks stay strong.
  • Don't fix cabinets or islands on top of a floating floor: it needs room to move.
  • Long runs: past about 40 feet in one direction, most manufacturers ask for a transition.

Which planks suit your room

For kitchens, bathrooms and basements, choose an SPC core with a 20 mil or thicker wear layer. For condos, look for an attached IXPE pad and an IIC rating that meets your building's bylaw. For rentals, a mid-range wear layer with a scratch-resistant finish is usually the best value, because single planks can be swapped after damage.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need underlay under click vinyl?
Only if the planks have no attached pad. Most SPC planks include an IXPE pad, and adding a second layer can damage the locking system.

Can click vinyl be installed over tile or existing vinyl?
Yes, if the surface is sound, clean and flat. Fill deep grout lines so the planks are fully supported.

How much expansion gap does click vinyl need?
About 6–10 mm at walls and fixed objects, depending on the brand and room size. The installation guide on each product page gives the exact figure.

Is click vinyl good for basements?
Yes. SPC click planks are waterproof and handle the temperature and humidity swings of below-grade rooms, provided the slab is dry and flat.
