Waterproof laminate flooring

Laminate earns the word "waterproof" differently from vinyl. The core is still wood-based, so manufacturers publish a rated number of hours the plank will hold out against standing water before it reaches the core. Across the 202 planks here that rating runs from 48 to 120 hours, with most of the range at 72 or 80. Prices start at $1.79 per sq ft, from Parador, HTBC, Triforest, Unifloor, HYBC, Taiga, Simba Floor, Grandeur, MSI Surfaces, Envision and Vidar.

How long each range holds water

  • 120 hours — Triforest TF83. 12.3 mm, embossed in register, zero gloss, AC4. The longest rating we stock.
  • 80 hours — HTBC, Unifloor AquaFix, HYBC, Simba Aqua Floor, Envision Solution. 12 mm boards, AC4 and AC5. HTBC is the value end of the whole collection at $1.79 to $3.99.
  • 72 hours — Triforest 81 Series and TF80, Unifloor AquaFix Royal, HYBC Aqua Vantage, Taiga Artfloor, Grandeur Aquamate, MSI Smithcliffs, Vidar. The bulk of the range, 10 to 12.3 mm.
  • 48 hours — Parador Trendtime 6 and Classic 1050. Thinner German boards at 8 to 9 mm, AC5 rated, built for abrasion resistance more than immersion.

Reading the two ratings

The hour rating and the AC class measure different things, and shoppers often conflate them.

  • Water hours tell you how long a spill can sit. This is the number that matters in a kitchen or laundry room.
  • AC class is surface abrasion. AC4 covers heavy residential and light commercial — kids, pets, an entry hall. AC5 is commercial grade, for shops and busy rentals. We stock 88 AC4 planks and 64 AC5.
  • Thickness — 8 mm to 12.3 mm here, with 12 mm the most common — changes how solid and quiet the floor feels and how well it bridges an imperfect subfloor. It does not improve water resistance.

Where it works, and where it does not

Kitchens, hallways, living areas, bedrooms and offices are all straightforward. A powder room is usually fine. What we would steer you away from is a full bathroom with a shower, a wet entry, or a basement that has taken on water before — in those rooms the core is the weak point no matter the rating, and SPC vinyl or waterproof vinyl is the honest recommendation. Over concrete, check the slab is dry and use an underlay with a moisture barrier built in.

Frequently asked questions

Is waterproof laminate actually waterproof?
Not in the way vinyl is. Laminate has a wood-based HDF core, so it is sold with a rated number of hours it will resist standing water — 48, 72, 80 or 120 hours across our range. Wipe a spill within that window and the plank is fine. Leave water sitting past it, or let it reach the core through a cut edge, and the board can swell. For a full bathroom, a wet entry or a basement that has flooded before, choose SPC vinyl instead.

What do the 48, 72, 80 and 120 hour ratings mean?
They are the manufacturer’s tested time before water penetrates the joint and reaches the core. Most of our range is 72 or 80 hours. Parador Trendtime 6 and Classic 1050 are rated 48 hours, and the Triforest TF83 series is the highest at 120 hours. Treat the number as a safety margin for spills, not permission to mop with a soaking wet head.

What is the difference between AC4 and AC5?
AC is the abrasion class of the surface, not the water rating. AC4 handles heavy residential and light commercial traffic — kids, pets, an entryway. AC5 is rated for commercial use and is the pick for a shop floor or a busy rental. We stock 88 AC4 planks and 64 AC5.

Does thicker laminate resist water better?
No. Thickness affects how solid and quiet the floor feels underfoot, not how it handles water — that comes from the core density and the joint sealing. A 12 mm board simply feels more substantial and bridges small subfloor imperfections better than an 8 mm one.

Can waterproof laminate go in a kitchen or basement?
A kitchen, yes — that is what these ratings are designed for. A basement depends on the slab: it must be dry, flat and have a moisture barrier under the floor. If the basement has ever taken on water, vinyl is the safer choice.

Does it need underlay?
Most of these planks ship without a pad and need one; the Triforest 81 Series is the exception at 10 mm with a 2 mm EVA pad already attached. Where you need a moisture barrier over concrete, use an underlay that includes one rather than stacking two pads, which can void the warranty.
