Wide laminate planks give you the look of a wide hardwood floor at a fraction of the price. Fewer seams across the room, more of the printed grain on show, and a wear layer that handles kids, pets and entryway grit better than most real wood. What makes a good wide laminate

AC rating: AC4 covers a busy family home; AC5 is commercial grade and worth it in entries and rentals.

Embossed in register: the surface texture lines up with the printed grain, which is what separates convincing laminate from flat-looking boards, and it matters more on a wide plank.

Water resistance: most cores resist spills for 24–72 hours. For bathrooms or laundry, choose SPC vinyl instead.

Attached underlay: quietens the floor and saves buying a separate roll; useful for condo sound requirements.

Bevelled edges: on wide boards, a painted bevel defines each plank and hides tiny height differences.
Installation notes
Wide boards need a flat subfloor: level dips before you start, because a wide plank bridges them instead of following them. Acclimatise the boxes in the room for 48 hours, leave the expansion gap the manufacturer specifies at every wall, and stagger end joints by at least 8 inches. Over concrete, lay a 6 mil vapour barrier first unless the underlay already includes one.
Where wide planks look best
Open-plan living and dining rooms, hallways run lengthwise, and condos where fewer seams make a compact space read larger. In rooms under about 10 feet wide, stay near 7 to 8 inches so the boards stay in proportion.

What width counts as wide plank laminate?
Boards about 7 inches and wider are sold as wide plank laminate. Standard laminate is usually around 5 to 6 inches.
Is wide plank laminate harder to install?
The planks themselves click together the same way, but they need a flatter subfloor, because a wide board bridges dips instead of following them.
Is laminate waterproof?
Most laminate is water-resistant for 24–72 hours, not waterproof. For wet rooms choose SPC vinyl.
Can wide plank laminate go in a condo?
Yes. Look for planks with an attached underlay, and check the IIC sound rating your building requires.
