Craft Flooring Guide: Artisan Engineered Hardwood in Canada & the USA (2026)

By Yaletown Floor · Published October 14, 2026 · 7 min read

Craft flooring is a line of artisan engineered hardwood floors built from North American hickory, white oak, select northern oak, black walnut and reclaimed heart pine. Every plank is 8 inches wide with a 3 mm sawn wood surface, and the range is large enough that the real question is which of its 11 series fits your room. We carry all 59 Craft floors, and this guide explains how the series differ so you can narrow the choice before you order samples.

1. How a Craft floor is built

Every Craft floor uses the same construction, which is why the comparison below is about species, grade and surface rather than build quality:

  • 15 mm total thickness (5/8 inch): a 3 mm sawn wood wear layer over a 12 mm eucalyptus multi-ply core
  • 8 inch wide planks in random 1 to 8 foot lengths
  • DuRa Finish Ultra Matte topcoat at 6–8% gloss, with a 0.7 mm micro-bevel edge
  • Certified: PEFC verified wood, GREENGUARD Gold, Declare Red List Free, with an EPD

The 3 mm wear layer is the figure to look for in any engineered floor. It is real wood thick enough to be sanded and refinished later, rather than a thin veneer that can only be cleaned.

2. The five species

Species Colours Series
Hickory 23 Castillo Plank, Urbana, Lakeside Plank, Zen, Stylewood
White oak 19 Contempa, Vineyard Plank, Stylewood
Black walnut 6 Luxe, Legacy Plank
Select northern oak 8 Modena
Reclaimed heart pine 3 Reclaimed Heart Pine

Hickory is one of the hardest North American hardwoods and shows strong contrast between light and dark grain, so it suits busy households and rustic or high-character rooms. White oak has a tight, even grain that takes colour evenly, which is why it gives the widest range of tones. Black walnut is the darkest and richest option. Reclaimed heart pine is salvaged wood that keeps its marks, so every plank varies.

3. The 11 series compared

4. Grades and surfaces

Two choices drive the look of a Craft floor besides colour: grade and surface. Craft uses four grade names: Elite, Premium, Natural and Character. Character grade carries the most visible knots and colour variation; the others are cleaner by comparison. Sample the specific colour to judge the variation yourself, because the same grade looks different in a dark colour than in a light one.

Surface is the texture of the wood. Hand-textured planks (Castillo Plank, Lakeside Plank, Legacy Plank, Reclaimed Heart Pine) have a deliberate rustic relief that hides wear. Wire-brushed planks (Urbana, Zen, Stylewood, Contempa, Vineyard Plank, Modena, Luxe) have the softer grain lifted by brushing, for a cleaner, more contemporary feel; Vineyard Plank is brushed more deeply than the rest.

5. Stock colours and custom order

40 of the 59 Craft colours are stock colours; the other 19 are custom order with a 12–14 week lead time. Contempa (9), Modena (8) and Zen (4) are entirely stock. Luxe, Legacy Plank and Reclaimed Heart Pine are entirely custom order, so allow for the lead time on a walnut or heart pine project. Herringbone is also available as a special order in any Craft colour in a 7 inch plank.

7. FAQ

Is Craft flooring engineered or solid?

Engineered. Each plank is 15 mm with a 3 mm sawn wood wear layer over a eucalyptus multi-ply core, which is more dimensionally stable than solid wood.

Which Craft series should I choose?

Start from the room. For a high-traffic home, the hand-textured hickory series (Castillo Plank, Lakeside Plank) hide wear well. For a lighter, contemporary look, Contempa and Modena have the most stock colours. For dark and dramatic, look at Luxe and Legacy Plank, bearing in mind the lead time.

How much does Craft flooring cost?

Craft floors are quoted individually. Call or email Yaletown Floor for pricing and we'll answer the same day.

Can I get a sample?

Yes, samples are available on the Craft range. Order one in the colour you like before you commit.
