SPC vinyl flooring

SPC stands for stone-plastic composite: a rigid core of limestone powder and PVC under a printed wear layer. That core is what makes SPC the most stable vinyl you can buy, so it barely reacts to heat or cold and hides small subfloor imperfections better than flexible vinyl. Our SPC range runs from $2.59 to $6.05 per sq ft, from Triforest, Montserrat, Parador, Unifloor, Biyork, Harbinger and others.

SPC, WPC or flexible LVP?

  • SPC: rigid and dense. Best over uneven subfloors, in sunrooms and anywhere heavy furniture sits. Thinner than WPC at the same strength.
  • WPC: a wood-plastic core with foam in it. Softer and warmer underfoot, but dents more easily under point loads.
  • Flexible LVP and glue-down LVT: thin planks glued to the subfloor. They need a very flat, smooth subfloor, and they are the usual choice for commercial spaces.

What the specs mean

  • Wear layer (mil): 12 mil suits bedrooms, 20 mil is the safe pick for a busy family home with pets, 28 mil and up is commercial grade. This matters far more than total thickness.
  • Attached pad: an IXPE or EVA pad bonded to the plank adds quiet and comfort, and usually removes the need for separate underlay.
  • Locking system: drop-lock systems (5G and similar) go together fastest for DIY installs.
  • IIC/STC: the sound numbers your condo board asks for; planks with an attached pad usually reach IIC 50+.

Where SPC works

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, rentals and whole-home renovations. It floats over concrete, plywood, and in most cases over existing tile or vinyl, which saves demolition. Leave the recommended expansion gap at the walls, and in rooms with big windows follow the manufacturer's guidance on direct sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPC vinyl really waterproof?
Yes, the plank itself is waterproof through its full thickness. Standing water can still reach the subfloor through the seams and perimeter, so wipe spills and seal the perimeter in full bathrooms.

Can SPC go over existing tile?
Usually yes, if the tile is sound and flat. Fill deep grout lines first so the planks are fully supported.

What wear layer should I choose?
12 mil for bedrooms, 20 mil for busy homes with kids and pets, 28 mil or more for commercial use.

Does SPC need underlay?
Most SPC comes with an attached pad and needs none. Adding a second pad can void the warranty.
