The wider a solid board is, the more it moves with humidity, which shows up as gapping in winter and cupping in a wet summer. Engineered planks use a cross-layered core that holds its width through those swings, which is why nearly every wide floor sold in Canada is engineered. It also means wide planks can go over concrete slabs and hydronic radiant heat.
In a room under about 10 feet wide, 7-1/2 inch planks still read as wide without dominating the space. Lighter colours and matte finishes hide dust and pet scratches better than dark, glossy boards, which matters more on a wide plank because there is more visible surface per board.
