Wide plank hardwood flooring

Wide planks show more of the grain and fewer seams, so a room reads calmer and larger. Today's standard is 7 to 9-1/4 inches, and some collections run to 12. This page holds our wide engineered floors from Parador, Craft, Bjelin, Välinge, Kährs and others, from $7.79 to $13.99 per sq ft.

Why wide planks are engineered

The wider a solid board is, the more it moves with humidity, which shows up as gapping in winter and cupping in a wet summer. Engineered planks use a cross-layered core that holds its width through those swings, which is why nearly every wide floor sold in Canada is engineered. It also means wide planks can go over concrete slabs and hydronic radiant heat.

What to check before you buy

  • Wear layer: 2–3 mm suits normal family use; 4 mm and thicker can be sanded and refinished later.
  • Length: long boards suit big open rooms; in a small room, very long planks can leave awkward cuts at the walls.
  • Installation: wide planks are usually glued down or floated. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is the common choice over concrete.
  • Subfloor flatness: wide boards are less forgiving of dips. Level the subfloor to the manufacturer's tolerance before starting.
  • Bevels: micro-bevelled edges hide small height differences between boards; square edges give a flatter, more seamless look.

Room size and light

In a room under about 10 feet wide, 7-1/2 inch planks still read as wide without dominating the space. Lighter colours and matte finishes hide dust and pet scratches better than dark, glossy boards, which matters more on a wide plank because there is more visible surface per board.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as wide plank flooring?
In Canada, planks 5 inches and wider are called wide plank. Most of this collection is 7 to 9-1/4 inches, and some collections reach 12.

Is wide plank flooring more likely to cup?
Solid wide boards can. Engineered wide planks use a cross-layered core that stays much flatter through seasonal humidity changes.

Can wide plank go over radiant heat?
Yes, engineered wide plank can, when you follow the manufacturer floor-temperature limit and the subfloor moisture requirements.

Do wide planks need a flatter subfloor?
Yes. Wide boards bridge dips instead of following them, so level the subfloor to the tolerance in the installation guide before you start.
