Vidar Flooring Guide: West, East & Herringbone Collections (2026)

By Yaletown Floor · Published September 17, 2026 · 8 min read

Vidar is one of our most-requested hardwood brands, and the range is broader than most people realise: 147 engineered floors across American white oak, European white ash and two herringbone collections, from a value 9/16" board up to 3/4" floors with a lifetime structural warranty. This guide explains which collection is which, what the grades mean, and where each one fits.

1. The collections at a glance

Collection Thickness Width Wear layer Coverage / box
West Collection 7.5" 9/16" 7.5" 3 mm 32.58 sq ft
West Collection 9" 9/16" 9" 3 mm 30.20 sq ft
American White Oak 7 3/4" 7" 3 mm 25.32 sq ft
American White Oak 6 3/4" 6" 2 mm 19.96 sq ft
European White Ash 7 3/4" 7" 3 mm 23.81 sq ft
European White Ash 6 3/4" 6" 2 mm 19.04 sq ft
American White Oak Clic 3/4" 5" 24.18 sq ft
East Herringbone 5" 3/4" 5" blocks 20.99 sq ft
West Herringbone 5" 9/16" 5" blocks 18.19 sq ft

Prices run from $4.49 to $9.49 per sq ft. The West collections are the value end: a 9/16" board with a full 3 mm wear layer and the biggest boxes in the range, which keeps the price per square foot down on larger floors. The 3/4" American oak and European ash collections are the premium end, finished in matte UV and backed by a 35-year finish warranty and a lifetime structural warranty.

2. Wood grain: Character, Select, Select & Better

Most Vidar colours are listed as a single product with a Wood Grain choice, and the price changes with it:

  • Character: the most knots, mineral streaks and colour movement. The most forgiving floor in a busy house, and the lowest price.
  • Select: a balanced look with some character but fewer large knots.
  • Select & Better: the cleanest and most uniform boards, for calm modern interiors. The highest price of the three.

Because all three come from the same colour, you can pick the look you want without changing the stain. Order samples in two grades if you are unsure; the difference is easier to judge in your own light than on a screen.

3. Herringbone

Vidar makes herringbone in both families: the East Herringbone 5" in 3/4" American white oak with an ultra-matte Bona finish, and the West Herringbone 5" in 9/16". Blocks are 5" wide, with 20.99 and 18.19 sq ft per box.

Budget 10–15% waste for the angled cuts at the perimeter, and expect your installer to charge more per square foot than for straight planks. See more pattern floors on our herringbone hardwood page.

4. Installation and warranties

  • Nail, glue or float: most collections can be nailed or glued down, and floated over an approved underlay.
  • Click option: the American White Oak Clic collection floats with a click system, which suits condos and concrete slabs.
  • Warranties: 35-year finish plus lifetime structural on the 3/4" oak and ash collections; 25 years on the West collections.
  • Condos: for a floating install, add an acoustic underlay that meets your building's IIC requirement.
  • Radiant heat: check the specification on the product page before ordering for a heated floor.

5. Which Vidar floor suits your room

  • Large open floor on a budget: West Collection 7.5" or 9" — big boxes, 3 mm wear layer, lowest cost per sq ft.
  • Forever floor: American White Oak 7 or European White Ash 7 at 3/4" with a 3 mm wear layer and lifetime structural warranty.
  • Busy family home: a Character grade, which hides dings and colour changes best.
  • Condo over concrete: American White Oak Clic, floating, with an acoustic underlay.
  • Feature space: East or West Herringbone in an entry or dining room.
