What Is SPC Flooring? The Complete Canadian Guide (2026)

SPC is the fastest-growing floor in Canada and the most poorly explained. The short version: SPC is a vinyl floor with a limestone core, and that core is why it is thin, hard, dimensionally stable and genuinely waterproof. Everything else in this guide follows from that one fact. Below we cover what the acronym means, which specification actually governs it, why the wear layer matters more than the thickness on the box, how it behaves on a cold Canadian slab, and what all 240 SPC floors we stock actually cost. We also correct three claims that appear routinely on product listings — including some we sell.

What SPC Actually Stands For

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite. You will also see it written as Stone Polymer Composite, and occasionally as "rigid core" or "EVP" (engineered vinyl plank) — those last two are category names that include SPC rather than synonyms for it.

The name is unusually literal. The core of an SPC plank is limestone powder — calcium carbonate — blended with PVC resin and stabilisers, then extruded under heat and pressure into a solid, rigid board. Typical formulations run heavily toward the mineral: limestone is the bulk ingredient, not a filler added at the margin. That is what makes the board feel like a tile and sound like one when you tap it.

There is no wood anywhere in an SPC floor. Not in the core, not in the backing. This is the single most useful thing to know about it, because almost every practical difference between SPC and laminate — water behaviour, dent resistance, weight, sound, how it handles a damp basement — traces back to the absence of wood fibre. The Five Layers of an SPC Plank

Nearly every SPC floor on the Canadian market is built the same way, top to bottom:

When a manufacturer quotes "6.5 mm with a 20 mil wear layer", the 6.5 mm is layers 1 through 4 combined, and the pad is quoted separately or bundled as "6.5 mm + 1 mm IXPE". This trips people up constantly when comparing two products, so check whether the headline thickness includes the pad before assuming one floor is thicker than another.

The Standard That Governs It — ASTM F3261

In North America the governing specification for rigid-core resilient flooring is ASTM F3261, Standard Specification for Resilient Flooring in Modular Format with Rigid Polymeric Core. It sets the material, manufacturing, physical and performance requirements for exactly this product category, and it is the document a manufacturer is claiming compliance with when a spec sheet says "meets ASTM F3261".

Two things worth knowing about it. First, wear layer thickness under F3261 is measured by ASTM F410 — so when a supplier quotes a mil figure, that is the test behind it. Second, F3261 covers rigid polymeric core products generally; SPC and WPC both sit inside it, distinguished by core composition and density rather than by separate standards.

Correction worth making: some listings quote an AC rating for SPC. AC ratings come from EN 13329, the European laminate standard, and the test abrades a melamine surface. It has no defined meaning for a PVC wear layer. If you see AC4 or AC5 on a vinyl product, treat it as marketing borrowed from another category and ask for the mil figure instead.

The Wear Layer Is the Number That Matters

If you take one spec away from this guide, take this one. The wear layer is a clear PVC film over the printed decor, and its thickness is quoted in mils — thousandths of an inch. One mil is 0.0254 mm, so the common figures convert like this:

Two planks can be identical in thickness, price and appearance and differ threefold in how long the surface survives. A 6.5 mm floor with a 20 mil wear layer will outlast an 8 mm floor with a 6 mil wear layer in every room that matters. Thickness buys you stability and sound; wear layer buys you service life. Core Density — The Spec Nobody Prints

Under ASTM F3261, an SPC core is expected to hit a minimum density in the region of 1.95 g/cm³. That figure is what separates a true SPC board from a lightly mineral-filled composite wearing the name.

You will almost never see it on a product page, ours included. It is a genuine gap in how this category is sold in Canada, and it is worth asking your supplier for when two floors look identical on paper but one is noticeably cheaper. A denser core is heavier in the hand, quieter when tapped, and better at resisting the dent from a dropped pan or a piano leg. If a supplier cannot produce a density figure or a compliance statement, that tells you something.

What Waterproof Means, Honestly

SPC is one of the few flooring materials where the waterproof claim is defensible at the material level. Limestone does not absorb water. PVC does not absorb water. Submerge an SPC plank, dry it, and it comes back the same size — which is emphatically not true of the compressed wood fibre in a laminate core.

But the plank is not the floor. In a floating installation, water crosses the seams and reaches whatever is underneath. On plywood that means the subfloor swells while the floor above it looks fine. Under an attached foam pad it means moisture with nowhere to go. Against a wall it means wicking into drywall and baseboard.

So the accurate sentence is: an SPC plank is waterproof; an SPC floor is water-tolerant. A dishwasher that fails overnight will not destroy the planks — you can often lift, dry and relay a floating floor — but it can still destroy the subfloor. Thickness, Attached Pad and Build Height

SPC runs thinner than almost every competing floating floor because the core is dense enough not to need bulk. Typical Canadian residential SPC lands between 4 mm and 8 mm before the pad. That thinness is a practical advantage in renovations. A 4 to 6 mm floor with a 1 mm pad often goes in without cutting door bottoms or rebuilding transitions to adjoining rooms — the same reason slim engineered floors exist. If you are matching to an existing floor height, measure the transition before you choose, not after.

Sound, IIC and the Condo Question

SPC is the hardest and densest of the rigid-core floors, which means it is also the noisiest underfoot if you install it bare. The attached pad is doing real work, and in a condo it is rarely enough on its own.

The ratings you will encounter are IIC (Impact Insulation Class — footsteps and dropped objects) and STC (Sound Transmission Class — airborne noise like voices and television). Both are laboratory numbers. IIC is measured under ASTM E492 using a standard tapping machine; the field equivalent, measured in a real building under ASTM E1007, is called FIIC and is routinely several points lower than the lab figure for the same assembly.

Here is the part most articles get wrong. The National Building Code of Canada does not set an IIC requirement. Since 2015 the NBC has regulated airborne sound between dwelling units via an ASTC 47 minimum, which accounts for flanking paths as well as direct transmission. Impact sound has no corresponding national requirement. Every IIC number your building demands comes from your strata or condominium bylaw, not from the building code — which is exactly why the required figure varies so widely from one building to the next.

Some SPC ranges publish assembly IIC figures — Floor tek Butchart at IIC 73, Taiga Stonewear+ at 72, Twelve Oaks Solid Core and Cascade Odyssey at 71. Read those as the tested assembly, not the plank alone. Radiant Heat and Cold Slabs

Most SPC is approved over hydronic radiant floor heating, typically with a surface temperature ceiling in the region of 27 to 29 °C. Treat that ceiling as a hard limit rather than a suggestion. PVC expands with heat, and a floor run hotter than its rating can expand past what the perimeter expansion gap allows — which presents as peaking or lifting at the seams, usually blamed on the installer.

The cold-slab case matters more in Canada. SPC's mineral core is dimensionally stable across the temperature swing of a basement or an unheated cottage far better than any wood-based floor, which is why it is a sound choice for spaces that are not heated year-round. What it will not do is feel warm. A limestone core conducts heat away from your feet. Subfloor Tolerance — The Real Advantage

This is SPC's most underrated property and the reason installers reach for it. A rigid core bridges minor subfloor irregularity that a flexible glue-down vinyl would telegraph straight through to the surface. Lay a sheet of flexible LVT over a slab with a shallow dip and you will see the dip; lay SPC over the same slab and often you will not.

"Bridges minor irregularity" is not "fixes a bad subfloor". Manufacturers generally specify flatness within about 3 mm over 2 m, and exceeding it causes hollow spots, clicking underfoot and eventually joint failure. Levelling compound runs $1 to $3 per square foot when it is needed, and it is cheaper than relaying a floor. Test and level first.

Installation and Expansion Gaps

Almost all residential SPC is a floating click floor — no adhesive, no fasteners, planks locked edge to edge and free to move as a single sheet. That is why it installs fast and why a competent DIYer can manage a straightforward room. Some formats, particularly tile-look SPC in commercial settings, are specified as glue-down instead.

The two rules that decide whether a floating SPC floor succeeds:

  • Leave the expansion gap. Typically 6–10 mm at every wall and every fixed object — pipes, columns, door jambs. PVC moves with temperature, and a floor pinned at the perimeter has nowhere to go but up. This is the single most common cause of peaking, and it is always avoidable.
  • Respect the run length. Manufacturers specify a maximum continuous run before an expansion joint is required, commonly in the region of 10 m. Open-plan Canadian main floors exceed it more often than people expect, and a T-mould in a doorway is far cheaper than a failed floor.

Acclimation is shorter than for wood — usually 24 to 48 hours in the installation space — but it is not optional, particularly for material delivered off a cold truck in February.

Maintenance

SPC is close to the lowest-maintenance floor sold. Sweep or vacuum on a hard-floor setting, damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner, wipe spills when you see them. That is the whole routine.

What actually damages it: steam mops (heat plus moisture forced into the seams — outside almost every warranty), abrasive or wax-based products, and unfelted furniture. Fit felt pads to every chair and table leg and use wide, soft castors on office chairs. Grit tracked in from outside is more abrasive than anything else your floor will meet, so a mat at each exterior door does more for service life than any cleaning product.

Indoor Air Quality

SPC is a PVC product, and the two questions worth asking are about emissions and plasticisers.

On emissions, look for FloorScore certification, which tests finished flooring against California Section 01350 for VOC emissions. On plasticisers, look for an explicit phthalate-free declaration — the industry has largely moved away from ortho-phthalates, but "largely" is not "entirely". Reputable SPC sold in Canada generally carries both, and we will send you the certificate for any product we stock if you ask.

Pros and Cons of SPC

Pros

  • Genuinely waterproof core. Limestone and PVC do not swell. No flooring material handles moisture more predictably at this price.
  • Dent resistant. The densest of the rigid cores — better under furniture legs and appliance feet than WPC or foam-cored alternatives.
  • Dimensionally stable. Handles the Canadian humidity swing and cold basements without the movement that affects wood-based floors.
  • Thin build height. 4–8 mm means renovations often avoid cutting doors or rebuilding transitions.
  • Forgiving over imperfect subfloors. Rigid core bridges minor irregularity that flexible vinyl would telegraph.
  • Fast, low-cost installation. Floating click systems keep labour at the bottom of the flooring range.

Cons

  • Cold and hard underfoot. The mineral core conducts heat away. WPC or cork is the better choice for comfort.
  • Noisy without underlay. Dense cores transmit impact sound; in a condo you will usually need a rated acoustic underlay on top of the attached pad.
  • Cannot be refinished. When the wear layer goes, the floor is replaced. There is no sanding path.
  • Wear layer is often buried in the spec. Two visually identical floors can differ threefold in service life, and the cheaper one is usually the thinner one.
  • Heat sensitivity in direct sun. Better than WPC, but dark planks behind large south-facing glass still need the manufacturer's temperature rating checked.
  • It is a printed floor. A photograph under plastic, not wood. Pattern repeat is visible in large open areas on cheaper ranges.
